Hawaii, with its many microclimates, has all the optimum conditions to grow many varieties of beautiful orchids. The volcanoes provide altitude variations which translates to great temperature range. Ever reliable north easterly trade winds bring plenty of moisture to the east side of the islands, while the west side basks in plenty of sunshine. The Arandas, Mokaras, Vandas and Dendrobiums enjoy sunny, warm and drier climate. Cattleya family and the Intergenerics (broad range of interbred spray orchids) enjoy moderate sun and a little cooler and moist environment. Cymbidiums prefer cooler, higher altitudes for optimum production. Most species are epiphytic, meaning that they subsist on moisture in the air rather than to drink water in the soil. The island soil is based on porous lava rock so it is an absolutely ideal porous growing medium for these flowers.

Orchids were brought to the islands by collectors from areas of the Pacific Rim, tropical South America, Philippines and Indonesia. Some of the small-flowered Dendrobiums are unique to Hawaii, their exceptional stem lengths loaded down with blossoms make them a premium choice for wedding and party work. The length of sprays available vary from grower to grower, and seasonally.
